Kathryn Harvey turns a Succulent Planter
I’ve long enjoyed wood as a medium, whether utilitarian or in art form. The beauty of the grain and the link to the natural world speak to me. I love wood.
But turning itself only came to me recently. After raising children amidst a family plagued with a degenerative neuromuscular disease, and working long hours as a physician and family caregiver, I finally reached a point where I could pursue other endeavors. Then the pandemic hit. By the end, I was truly in need of creative pursuits. This was when Hari stumbled upon my mildly compulsive and obsessive self, presenting to the wood shop with some lovely turned pieces. I knew I wanted to give that a try.
The breadth of the art form, endless opportunities for artistic expression, and a love of learning led to a deep dive, and soon I transformed a large unused area of my home into a creative space.
Turning has been a truly restorative pursuit for me. The artistic expression it allows, the seemingly never-ending creative exploration and learning, and the technical aspects of the craft combine to present constant challenges and opportunities in mastering the art form. Not to wax too eloquent, but it makes my heart sing and replenishes my soul. Let the shavings fly.
